SILVERTON, Ore. (AP) — Police in Silverton had to shoot and kill two pit bulls after the dogs kept fighting for more than 15 minutes.

The Statesman Journal reported that one of the dogs, a brindled pit bull, had the other pit bull by the throat and was shaking it and acting aggressively toward officers and bystanders.

The animals were owned by a Silverton man but were being cared for by his mother.

After several attempts to separate the animals and with permission from the owner’s mother, an officer shot the brindled pit bull to end the attack.

The other dog was severely injured. Unable to contact a veterinarian during the Thanksgiving holiday, officers were asked to shoot the injured dog to end its suffering.

No citations were issued.
