INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Colts have lost safety Melvin Bullitt for the rest of the season with a right shoulder injury. He is scheduled to have surgery and will be placed on injured reserve.

Team officials made the announcement in a release Tuesday.

It’s another blow to the Colts’ beleaguered defense, which has given up more than 400 yards rushing in its two losses.

Bullitt had replaced the oft-injured Bob Sanders, the 2007 NFL defensive player of the year. Sanders tore the biceps muscle in his right arm in the season opener and is expected to miss at least two more months. Backup linebacker Kavell Conner had surgery for a fractured left foot last week.

Indy also placed kick returner Devin Moore on injured reserve with nerve damage in the neck or shoulder area.
