ASHFORD, Wash. (AP) — Environmentalists are working to build support for a small expansion of Mount Rainier National Park.
Park Superintendent Dave Uberuaga says the 800-acre expansion on the park’s northwest corner would protect land along the Carbon River and threatened and endangered species such as the spotted owl.
Uberuaga tells The Seattle Times that money is available to buy the remaining land needed, but not to make trail improvements or build such things as a ranger station and campground.
Environment Washington is leading the campaign for the expansion and improvements, including asking people to write Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to show their support.
