Volunteers sought for Lunch Buddies program

An informational session for adults interested in joining Vancouver Public Schools’ volunteer Lunch Buddy program will be held Thursday.

The meeting runs noon to 12:45 p.m. at the district’s Robert C. Bates Center for Educational Leadership, 2921 Falk Road.

Lunch is available for $5 by calling ahead.

Under the program established in 1993 to create positive one-on-one mentoring, Each Lunch Buddy meets once a week with an elementary school pupil partner. Lunch, then play, crafts or conversation lasts no longer than an hour.

While 450 children in Vancouver Public Schools have been matched with adults, more than 100 pupils remain on a waiting list. The need is especially great for male volunteers in the 20 elementary schools that participate — all but Salmon Creek Elementary.

For more information, contact Barbara Nordstrom, Vancouver School District Foundation Lunch Buddy Coordinator, at 360-313-4725 or LunchBuddy@vansd.org.
