VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) — A Clark County sheriff’s deputy was saved when his vest stopped a bullet fired by a Vancouver man who had shot his pregnant sister.

Police say Deputy Gordon Conroy was hit in the torso but not injured in a Tuesday night shootout.

The Columbian reports officers had responded to a woman who said she had been shot by her brother and was five months pregnant. Records show 34-year-old Angela Pyle and 38-year-old Anthony J. Pyle living at the address.

Southwest Medical Center spokeswoman Michelle Schaefer said Wednesday that Angela Pyle is in satisfactory condition.

A SWAT team surrounded a shed where the gunman holed up. Officers used tear gas and tried to talk him into surrendering, but he killed himself just before midnight.
