Talking Points 10/19

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

1

Here are some reality checks on the first BCS poll of the college football season courtesy of Yahoo! Sports’ Dan Wetzel:

• The first poll rarely matters — just once have the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the first standings met in the title game (2005: Texas vs. USC). While the No. 1 has reached the title game six of 12 years, twice those teams dropped before returning.

• 2007, South Florida, ranked second initially, did not even finish in the top 20.

• Forget every game matters. In some years, with the BCS, a game can actually not matter at all. In 2001, Nebraska lost its final game 62-36 to Colorado and did not even advance to the Big 12 title game. Two weeks later, without playing another game, the Cornhuskers were selected for the BCS national title game anyway.

One radio talent suggested Monday that Boise State and Texas Christian will be in the national title game.

Sure, why not?

However, Talking Points offers up this reason as to why it won’t be the Broncos and Horned Frogs: “Lowest rated BCS title game ever.”

Mariners fans seem to have an untrusting relationship with the team’s management.

And who can blame them?

Many are not believing that Eric Wedge will have much of an impact as manager until other front office positions are replaced.

Once that happens, maybe the team will make the right moves to get the needed bats in the lineup … or Cliff Lee back in the rotation.
