TOPPENISH, Wash. (AP) — Ranchers in Eastern Washington and northern Idaho are cooperating to put more beef in food banks.
The Yakima Herald-Republic reports several livestock associations are partnering with Second Harvest Inland Northwest in a program called Beef Counts.
Cattlemen are donating cash and animals. One donated steer was auctioned off eight times on Tuesday night at a fundraiser in Toppenish that brought in more than $10,000.
The Washington Beef slaughterhouse in Toppenish will match public donations up to $50,000.
In December, money raised will be used to buy beef and distribute it to 275 food banks in Eastern Washington and northern Idaho.
