SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — A Boston company wants to build a wind farm near Oakesdale, about 30 miles south of Spokane.

The Spokesman-Review reports it would be the first commercial wind farm in Whitman County.

The First Wind Energy company is seeking permits for up to 50 wind turbines on land leased from farmers.

First Wind’s Northwest director, Ben Fairbanks, says the site was selected for its combination of prevailing winds and proximity to a transmission line. He says the wind farm could generate enough electricity for 25,000 homes.
