PORT ANGELES, Wash. (AP) — Tribal members have erected a 20-foot tall Welcome Pole at Peninsula College in Port Angeles.

Carved from a cedar log, it depicts a man with forearms extended and hands facing upward in a gesture common to the Lower Elwha Klallam and Jamestown S’Klallam tribes.

The Peninsula Daily News reports about 250 people attended the ceremony Tuesday at the House of Learning Longhouse on the college campus.

College President Tom Keegan says the pole tells Native American students they belong at the college.
