LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — The International Olympic Committee is examining whether two sponsorship deals involving South Korean companies breach conflict of interest rules with regard to Pyeongchang’s bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics.
The South Korean city of Pyeongchang, which has lost out twice before, is bidding against Munich and France’s Annecy for the 2018 games.
Samsung has signed a deal to sponsor rowing’s world governing body FISA, and Korean Air has linked up with the International Skating Union.
The heads of FISA and the ISU are members of the IOC and can vote when the 2018 host city is decided in July.
The IOC says it is “aware of potential conflicts of interests and as per IOC procedure, the Ethics Commission is looking into it.”
