SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Salem police say a man hit by a freight train while walking in the city’s downtown area has been hospitalized in critical condition.

Lt. Dave Okada says the man was struck shortly before 8 p.m. Thursday by a southbound Union Pacific train. He was not immediately identified.

Okada says the train was moving slowly through the city when the crew saw a person walking on the tracks. Crew members blew the train whistle but were unable to stop in time.

The man was taken to Salem Hospital.
