SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Notre Dame quarterback Dayne Crist has undergone knee surgery and is done for the season.
Coach Brian Kelly also says leading rusher Armando Allen might need hip surgery for torn cartilage and his Irish career is likely over.
Crist’s operation Sunday was to reattach a torn patellar tendon. He hurt his left knee in the first quarter of Saturday’s 28-27 loss to Tulsa.
This is the second straight year Crist’s season has been cut short by a knee injury. A year ago he needed surgery after tearing a ligament in his right knee while backing up Jimmy Clausen.
Freshman Tommy Rees stepped in Saturday and threw four TD passes but also three interceptions. Notre Dame (4-5) will start Rees at quarterback with three games left.
