EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — A Snohomish County sheriff’s spokeswoman says a 23-year-old Lynnwood-area man was arrested Wednesday evening after a manhunt that at one point closed all lanes of Interstate 5, backing up commuter traffic.
Officers accuse the man of firing at a pursuing deputy’s vehicle and causing a freeway crash that injured a woman in another vehicle. His name was not released.
When northbound freeway traffic in the Everett area began moving again shortly before 9 p.m., the backup stretched five miles. Southbound lanes reopened about 7 p.m. All lanes in the area were shut down for about an hour.
Spokeswoman Rebecca Hover says deputies initially pursued a black Jetta they thought might be stolen. That pursuit took on new urgency when the Jetta’s driver fired and hit a deputy’s vehicle. Hover says deputies later determined the car was not stolen but the license plates had been canceled. The driver fled on foot after the freeway crash.
