TIGARD, Ore. (AP) — Police in the Portland suburb of Tigard say a husband and wife were found fatally shot at an apartment complex in an apparent murder-suicide.

Officers found the bodies of 34-year-old Jeffrey Njus and 31-year-old Ilona Njus outside an apartment in a breezeway Tuesday night at the Arbor Heights Apartments.

Police say the woman’s mother told officers she saw the man shoot her daughter, then turn the gun on himself.

The couple’s 2-year-old daughter was found sleeping unharmed in the apartment. Lt. Erick Boothby says state caseworkers have placed the child with the woman’s mother.

Police and friends say the couple had recently separated.
