SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — A Canadian mining company will begin cleaning up a public beach on Lake Roosevelt later this month as part of efforts to clean up decades of pollution that flowed from a British Columbia smelter into the United States.

The cleanup of Black Sand Beach shows that Teck American Inc. is serious about protecting the environment of the Columbia River north of Spokane.

Company vice president David Godlewski said the work will begin in mid-month and last four to six weeks. The company under a deal with the federal government is conducting a major study of pollution in Lake Roosevelt.
