TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is awarding $13 million in science grants to help protect and restore Puget Sound.

EPA Regional Administrator Dennis McLerran joined Congressmen Norm Dicks and Adam Smith Wednesday to announce the money and unveil plans for the Puget Sound Research Institute at the University of Washington Tacoma.

The Washington state Department of Health is one of several agencies getting a grant.

Money will also be used to study the effects of industrial contaminants on Puget Sound salmon, to protect wetlands from development and to protect local beaches and shellfish beds.
