Prairie’s Tanner Maahs and Ilwaco’s Ryan Kukula posted the low scores at the Thunder Invitational golf tournament at Rose City Golf Course in Portland as both golfers shot even-par 72.

Kukula led Ilwaco to the team championship Tuesday for the second consecutive year as the Fishermen outdistanced Union 306-319. Hockinson placed third at 322, followed by Prairie (326), Camas (330), Skyview (333) and Washougal (335).

Washougal’s Connor O’Neil was third overall (73). He was followed by Union’s Andrew Spicer (74), Ilwaco’s Patrick Whealdon (75), Union’s Alistair Docherty (75) and Woodland’s Trey Udy (75).

Rounding out the top 10 were Chad Hall of Battle Ground (77), Nick Huff of Hockinson (77) and Taylor Smith of Mountain View (78).

McPherson resigns

Leta Meyer of Heritage said it is official: Donnie McPherson has resigned as wrestling coach at Heritage High School. Meyer, the school’s athletic coordinator, said the district is posting the opening.

McPherson led Heritage’s team to the 2003 Class 4A state championship.

“I ask a lot of them, but they came through. Everybody did their part,” he said that night in the Tacoma Dome.

McPherson also coached several individual state champions during his tenure with the Timberwolves.

McPherson did not return a phone call asking for comment.

Blue flags will fly

High school football teams in Washington that have touchdowns nullified by a penalty this weekend will be feeling blue.

For the third year, game officials throughout the state will be using blue penalty flags at games this weekend as part of Coaches Against Cancer, a program to raise awareness of prostate cancer. September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and blue is the marketing color for prostate cancer awareness. Washington is one of five states taking part in the campaign, joining Hawaii, New Mexico, Oregon and Rhode Island.
