The Susan G. Komen Portland Race for the Cure(R) brought more than 40,000 runners, walkers, survivors, co-survivors and volunteers to Tom McCall Waterfront Park on Sunday, September 19th. Participants helped to raise $2 million to fight breast cancer.
In addition, more than 2,000 people from across Oregon and SW Washington who weren’t able to attend the Race in person participated in Sleep-In for the Cure, sponsored by Pacific Power. Sleep-In participants receive access to online fundraising support in addition to their Race t-shirt and commemorative pin by mail. Sleep In for the Cure online registration will remain open until 5:00PM on Tuesday, September 22.
“We’re thrilled the community is so passionate about fighting to find a cure for breast cancer,” said Christine McDonald, Executive Director of Komen Oregon and SW Washington. “Oregon has some of the highest incidence rates of breast cancer in the country. The money raised will fuel Komen Oregon’s life-saving programs throughout our service area of Oregon and SW Washington.”
Seventy-five percent of the money that was raised will fund for breast cancer screening, breast health education and support services for women throughout Oregon and SW Washington. The other twenty-five percent will go to a national pool for research. Susan G. Komen for the Cure(R) will spend $1 billion on research over the next decade. It is the largest private funder of breast cancer research in the world.
