OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Jeff Garcia’s 12-yard touchdown pass to fellow NFL veteran Robert Ferguson with 6 seconds left gave the Omaha Nighthawks their first lead of the game and a 27-26 United Football League victory over the Hartford Colonials.
The dramatic finish overshadowed Maurice Clarett’s quiet return to football Friday night. Clarett had a short kickoff return and nearly blocked a punt in his first game since leading Ohio State to the 2002 national championship.
Omaha came back from a 23-10 deficit after three quarters to win before a UFL-record crowd of 23,067.
After Ferguson scored, the former Green Bay Packer leapt into the end zone seats, a la the Lambeau Leap. Jeff Wolfert kicked the winning extra point.
The five-team UFL is in its second season as a place for aging veterans and borderline NFL players looking for another chance in the big time.
