SEATTLE (AP) — NOAA has awarded more than $48 million in grants to the University of Washington, the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission and several Washington state agencies.
The money will help protect salmon, support fish hatcheries and improve understanding about climate impacts. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke announced the awards Thursday.
Gov. Chris Gregoire said in a statement Friday that the federal money is important for efforts to restore Puget Sound and recover salmon in the state.
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is getting two grants totaling $10.8 million. The Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office is getting $27.5 million for various projects.
