BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Buffalo Sabres rookie forward Zack Kassian’s agent has told The Associated Press the team has resumed contract talks with their 2009 first-round pick.

Paul Krepelka said by phone Monday that he’s hopeful of a deal being reached as early as this week. He said talks resumed last week for the first time since the Sabres suspended negotiations after Kassian was charged with assault for allegedly punching a man at a bar in his hometown of Windsor, Ontario, in May.

The team said it remained open to signing Kassian if he learned from what happened.

The Sabres were not immediately available for comment.

Kassian had an assist and contributed on another goal in Buffalo’s preseason-opening 3-1 win over Toronto on Saturday.
