KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The Taliban say they did not orchestrate Friday’s attack on an U.N. compound in northern Afghanistan that left seven foreigners dead.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid sent a text message to The Associated Press Saturday denying that the insurgency was responsible for killing four U.N. guards and three other foreigners working at the U.N. complex in Mazar-i-Sharif.

They were killed when hundreds of Afghans angry about the recent burning of the Muslim holy book at a small Florida church stormed the U.N. compound.

Authorities say at least 100 demonstrators protested the Quran burning on Saturday in Kandahar in the south. An AP photographer covering the protest estimated the crowd at a few thousand and said the demonstrators turned violent and smashed his camera.
