VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) — A Clark County, Wash., Sheriff’s dog was stabbed to death early Saturday as he tried to detain a suspect.

The police K-9, named Kane, was working with sheriff’s deputies to find two suspects who had fled from a stolen vehicle after trying to ram a police car. Police say the dog tried to detain one of the suspects and was stabbed.

Kane died at St. Francis Animal Hospital in Vancouver, Wash. He worked as a police dog for the past six years and was set to retire next year.

Deputies arrested 31-year-old Keegan Graves, of La Center, on suspicion of harming a police dog, auto theft and attempting to elude a police officer. They also arrested 22-year-old Natasa Cresap, of Yacolt, on an outstanding Department of Corrections warrant.
