EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — A 41-year-old Oregon man has pleaded guilty in the torture death of his 15-year-old stepdaughter and been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.

The Register-Guard newspaper reports that Richard McAnulty had been charged with aggravated murder. He pleaded guilty Monday to murder by abuse of Jeanette Maples. She died in December 2009.

McAnulty’s wife, Angela, has been sentenced to death after she pleaded guilty to aggravated murder.

Prosecutors say Richard McAnulty failed to prevent or report his wife’s torture and abuse, and helped to enforce her restrictions on the teen’s food and water.

The newspaper quotes one of his lawyers as citing the man’s low IQ, inexperience making decisions for himself and disability as explanations, though not excuses, for his role.
