NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) — The arrival of spring has brought the annual reminder to stay away from seal pups on Oregon beaches.

Oregon State University biologists are warning the public to avoid touching or approaching seal pups left alone on the beach while their mothers are out looking for food.

Biologists say well-meaning people sometimes try to rescue seal pups they mistakenly believe are abandoned, or they crowd too close to the pups, preventing their mothers from returning to them.

People who get too close also risk being fined under laws intended to protect marine mammals from harassment.

Biologists say beachgoers should stay at least 50 yards away from seal pups and keep their dogs leashed.
