CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon farmer is encouraging other farmers in the Willamette Valley to switch from their grass seed crop to growing grains.

Harry MacCormack has been raising cereal grains such as wheat, maize, oats and barley for more than 40 years in Western Oregon, where the dominant farm crop is grass seed.

Most of the wheat in Oregon is grown east of the Cascades in the drier highlands.

But MacCormack told the Gazette-Times in Corvallis that more Willamette Valley farmers are interested in making a switch and are willing to try planting some of their acreage in grain crops.

MacCormack is an advocate of locally grown food, and has also started several farmers markets.
