Red Sox in talks for more hockey at Fenway

BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox are hoping to turn their ballpark into a skating rink again next winter in a repeat of last year’s Frozen Fenway.

And maybe a football field, too.

Fenway hosted the NHL’s Winter Classic on New Year’s Day 2010. Then the rink was used for a series of men’s and women’s college hockey games. At Mayor Tom Menino’s urging, the Red Sox also gave local youth teams and city residents a chance to skate on the ice.

It’s unlikely the NHL would come back to Fenway so soon, but Red Sox chief operating officer Sam Kennedy told Menino on Wednesday that the team would like to have college hockey games. The mayor was enthusiastic in his support.

Kennedy said the team was also exploring the possibility of a college football game.
