YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) — The Catholic church has named an auxiliary bishop of the Seattle Archdiocese as bishop of the Yakima Diocese, which covers seven counties in central Washington.

The Most Rev. Joseph J. Tyson will succeed the Most Rev. Carlos A. Sevilla who has been Yakima bishop since 1997.

The diocese said Tuesday that Tyson will be formally introduced at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family Parish in Yakima.

The 53-year-old Tyson was born in Moses Lake, which is in the diocese, and grew up in Seattle. He’s a University of Washington graduate who was ordained in 1989 and has been auxiliary bishop in Seattle since 2005.

Tyson speaks Spanish, a language shared by many of the 80,000 Catholics in the diocese, which includes Yakima, Benton, Chelan, Douglas, Grant, Kittitas and Klickitat counties.
