Letter: Same old story in Middle East

The Columbian
Published: April 13, 2011, 12:00am

When will an American president learn from history? Most of us know what happened in Iran when Jimmy Carter was president during the overthrow of the Shah in 1979. The first thing those freedom-loving people did was overrun our embassy and hold 52 Americans hostage for 444 days.

We armed the Afghans to fight the Russian and where did that get us? They hate us and love the Russians. We went into Iraq eight years ago, and with all due respect to the brave men and women who have served there, the only thing to come out it is Muslims killing Muslims. Now Muslims are killing Muslims in Libya and we think we have to help one side against an evil despot. Iran and Iraq have both proven that the people in that part of the world deserve to be under the boot of evil despots, as they have no idea what freedom really means.

Why can’t we just let the chips fall where they may? In the end, no matter what happens and which side prevails, they still are going to hate us.
