Timbers sign Chara as designated player

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Portland Timbers have signed Colombian midfielder Diego Chara as a designated player.

The team announced the deal on Wednesday. Terms were not disclosed.

Chara comes to the Timbers from Colombian first-division club Deportes Tolima, which had 88 goals and finished atop the Liga Postobon standings in 2010.

He had two goals in nine matches with Tolima this year.

Chara has also played for the Colombian National Team.
