SEATTLE (AP) — A Kent woman has been charged with sending envelopes containing baby powder and flour to the White House and the King County Sheriff’s Office.
Kate Michelle Young faces one count of making an anthrax hoax. Federal prosecutors are seeking to have her detained pending trial, saying she poses a flight risk.
According to a criminal complaint filed by a Secret Service agent, a mail carrier reported receiving a suspicious letter from a woman in Kent on April 11. It contained a white powder, was addressed to “President Obama-Sanchez” and had a return address indicating it came from Costco Corp. chief executive Jim Sinegal.
Other letters were delivered to the King County sheriff’s office.
The complaint said Young admitted sending the letters and was upset about losing her job at Costco. She made an initial court appearance Wednesday.
