Judge approves settlement for Ore. meeting lawsuit

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — A judge has approved a settlement in a public meetings lawsuit against the Lane County Board of Commissioners in Eugene.

The Register-Guard reports the board acknowledged it violated state law and that the county, along with Commissioners Rob Handy and Pete Sorenson, must pay damages.

The same judge ruled in January that Handy and Sorenson violated Oregon public meetings law by meeting privately with a board majority to line up budget votes for staff jobs.

The settlement calls for the county to pay $350,000 to a former county commissioner and a retired Eugene business owner who filed the lawsuit last year, while Handy and Sorenson each must pay $20,000 to the county.

In an email, Sorenson said he admits no wrongdoing in the settlement and called the suit politically motivated.
