SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The state House is scheduled to vote Wednesday on a bill that would allow former foster children to attend Oregon public universities for free.
The measure would apply to people under 25 years old attending universities, community colleges and Oregon Health and Science University. It is co-sponsored by Democratic Rep. Michael Dembrow of Portland and Republican Rep. Matt Wingard of Wilsonville.
Proponents say the measure would go a long way toward helping young people get a comfortable start in adulthood after aging out of the foster care system. But others question how the state would pay for it.
University officials estimate it would cost about $1 million.
