CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina radio play-by-play announcer Woody Durham says the time is right for him to retire after 40 years of calling some of the biggest sports moments in school history.
Durham held a news conference Wednesday to discuss his retirement, which is effective at the end of June.
Durham had been the “Voice of the Tar Heels” since 1971, calling more than 1,800 football and men’s basketball games. That included four NCAA men’s basketball championship victories — the 1982 and 1993 titles under Dean Smith as well as the 2005 and 2009 titles under Roy Williams.
Durham will turn 70 in August but says he has no health problems that are forcing him to retire. He says he decided in December that the 2010-11 season would be his last.
