Twins INF Young to undergo MRI for rib injury

BALTIMORE (AP) — Minnesota Twins infielder Delmon Young will undergo an MRI examination on Friday to determine the extent of a rib injury that has kept him out of the lineup since Monday.

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said Thursday that Young requested the MRI as a precaution before he attempts to return for a weekend series against Cleveland.

Young strained the rib while taking batting practice Monday, but still played in the game. He missed games Tuesday and Wednesday and was not in the lineup for Thursday’s game against the Orioles.

Young has also been hindered by the flu.

First baseman Justin Morneau sat out the entire four-game series in Baltimore with the flu. Gardenhire says Morneau received two doses of intravenous fluids on Thursday, bringing to five the number of IVs he’s gotten while in Baltimore.

The absence of Morneau and Young has left Gardenhire with only two bench players.
