Letter: Obligation easier with accountability

Like many U.S. taxpayers who are not getting a refund this year, I e-filed my taxes in these last few days before the deadline.

I’m grateful to be able to meet my tax obligations. I don’t mind paying taxes, mostly because I am happy that they are being used to educate and feed people; provide health, safety and protection; make investments in our children’s future and protect our environment.

At the same time, I am sad that I’m funding waste, tax breaks for the wealthy, big business subsidies and needless wars. No doubt, your list could be different than mine.

I just hope some day, when the tax system is overhauled, that a survey is included in the top 10 things our tax dollars are spent on, and asks us our opinion on what the priorities should be. Publish the results for all to see. Yeah, I know, we elect our representatives in Congress to figure that out, and there’s really little choice (debt ceiling) in many of the priorities.

But why not have some hard data to guide their votes and to try, whenever possible, to align them with the things we actually do want?
