JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. (AP) — A program at Joint Base Lewis-McChord is helping injured soldiers prepare for jobs outside the military.

It lets them “shadow” workers in the Pierce County Department of Emergency Management to get a feel for what work they might do in the future.

The News Tribune reports the Pierce County program is a pilot project the Army could duplicate nationwide to link veterans with jobs in emergency services.

One of six JBLM soldiers in the program is Dan Biskey of Gig Harbor who lost his left foot in a mine explosion in Afghanistan. Wearing a prosthetic leg, he crawled on top of a county mobile command center Wednesday to help install a satellite dish.
