SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Preliminary figures from the Oregon Department of Transportation show the number of fatal motorcycle crashes has dropped to the lowest level in Oregon since 2004, with 38 people killed last year.

The figures were released following a recent report by the Governors Highway Safety Association that showed motorcycle fatalities declined nationally in 2010 by at least 2 percent.

The association is projecting declines in approximately half of the states, with Oregon mentioned specifically as having a notable decline.

Gov. John Kitzhaber has proclaimed May as “Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month” in Oregon.
