Pikeminnow clinic slated tonight

A free clinic on catching northern pikeminnow will begin at 6:30 tonight at the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, 2108 Grand Blvd.

The pikeminnow reward program in the Columbia and Snake rivers begins Sunday. The program pays a bounty of $4 to $8 per fish for pikeminnow.

Guest speakers tonight will Eric Winther, project leader of the Columbia River Predator Control Program, and Tim Histand of Gresham, the No. 9-ranked pikeminnnow from 2010.

Histand caught 2,792 pikeminnow last year and earned $21,046. He is a perennial top 10 finisher in the reward program.

On Sunday, a season-opening event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the M. James Gleason boat ramp on Marine Drive in Portland.

The event will include a raffle of fishing tackle, live pikeminnow to examine and officials from the Washington and Oregon departments of Fish and Wildlife and Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission.

A year ago, anglers caught more than 174,000 pikeminnow and earned $1.2 million in rewards.

Show to feature Swiss Alps

PORTLAND — A free slide show on the Swiss Alps will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Multnomah Arts Center auditorium, 7688 S.W. Capitol HIghway.

Presented by the Oregon Nordic Club, the show will be by Darryl and Darvel Lloyd detailing their day hikes in the fall of 2010.

Gorge race slated May 7

STEVENSON — The fifth annual Carson to Stevenson Ridge Trail Run is scheduled for May 7.

The 9.3-mile event begins at 8 a.m. when walkers leave Wind River Middle School, 441 Hot Springs Ave., Carson. Runners will depart at 8:30 a.m. The course ends at the Skamania County Fairgrounds.

Shuttles will be available, but participants are encouraged to arrange their own carpool.

Registration forms can be downloaded from www.skamaniacountyparks.org and mailed back to Skamania Conty Facilities and Recreation. The county is $10 without a t-shirt or $20 with a shirt.

At the fairgrounds exhibit hall, the Columbia Gorge Fitness Fair is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The free event will explain about recreation classes, industry trends, fitness products and includes healthy cooking demonstrations.
