CHICAGO (AP) — Robbie Rogers, who once played with new U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann on a developmental league team, has been added to the roster for this week’s game against Mexico.

The Columbus Crew midfielder replaces Maurice Edu, who strained his left calf during Rangers exhibition against Chelsea on Saturday.

Rogers, a native of Huntington Beach, Calif., was 16 when he joined the Orange County Blue Stars, a local team Klinsmann played on for fun and to stay in shape. Rogers has said he learned a great deal from the World Cup champion, and last year changed his Crew number to 18 in honor of Klinsmann.

Rogers was on the preliminary roster for last year’s World Cup in South Africa. His most recent appearance was a June 4 exhibition against Spain.
