LAKEWOOD, Wash. (AP) — The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department has closed Waughop Lake in Fort Steilacoom Park in Lakewood, Wash., because of high levels of toxic algae. The department said Wednesday that a toxin produced by the naturally occurring algae has reached levels that could be dangerous for people and pets.

The greatest health risk is for pets. If the toxin is ingested by humans, gastrointestinal issues are most likely.

Although the lake will be closed to boating, swimming and fishing, the path around the lake will be open for walking.
