PORT ORCHARD, Wash. (AP) — The state Attorney General’s Office is taking over the domestic violence prosecution of a former Port Orchard police sergeant.

The Kitsap Sun reports (http://bit.ly/nTmgTi ) that the county prosecutor’s office recused itself, citing a possible conflict of interest. Former Staff Sgt. Dennis L. McCarthy was arrested late last year on charges that he pointed a gun at his girlfriend in May 2010 and pushed her out the second-story window of an Olalla home.

Prosecutor Russ Hauge (HOW’-ghee) declined to discuss the potential conflict. McCarthy’s lawyer, Tim Kelly, said Hauge’s office apparently learned that prosecutors could be called as witnesses in the case.

The woman broke her shoulder and legs in the fall. Detectives said McCarthy reported that she fell out the window while she was hanging curtains at 4:30 a.m.
