RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Workers renovating Maracana stadium for the 2014 World Cup have returned to work after a four-day strike.

The nearly 2,000 workers ended the strike Monday after employers agreed to improve working conditions at the venue that will host the 2014 World Cup final. The stadium is undergoing a complete renovation and will be used at the 2013 Confederations Cup and the 2016 Olympics.

Union leader Nilson Duarte said the workers negotiated an improved health plan and other benefits that will be implemented in the coming months.

The strike began after a worker received minor injuries when a barrel filled with chemicals exploded near him.
