NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Boeing workers in North Charleston are assembling the first new 787 to be made in South Carolina.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported (http://bit.ly/pNWt2T ) that the completed aft section of the plane body was wheeled into the assembly plant this week.

In the past, those sections were made in Charleston and flown to Washington state for assembly of a finished aircraft. Spokeswoman Candy Eslinger says the aft section was the last major section needed for final assembly.

The company this week also opened its welcome center. That building houses a security checkpoint as well as meeting rooms.

Earlier this year, Boeing dedicated its $750 million plant, the largest industrial investment in state history.
