PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Clackamas County sheriff’s deputies say a 21-year-old man who was first reported as having been shot while running in an Oregon City canyon actually accidentally shot himself.

The Oregonian (http://bit.ly/pOkERE ) quotes Sgt. James Rhodes as saying a mistake during an emergency call from the man’s mother Thursday evening led emergency responders to report that Philip Dalton of Oregon City was wounded in the leg as he ran.

Rhodes said Friday that Dalton told deputies he accidentally shot himself in his lower left calf while he and a 20-year-old friend were playing with a firearm.

The paper said Dalton was released from the hospital Thursday night. Rhodes says officers recovered the weapon and are conducting an investigation.
