DAEGU, South Korea (AP) — The IAAF has donated $250,000 to Japan to assist the country in rebuilding from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

The IAAF says President Lamine Diack presented Japan Athletics Association President Yohei Kono with a check Monday.

Diack was in Tokyo only a few days after the disaster and says he was moved by the resilience of the Japanese people.

Diack says “what I saw was a lesson for us all, to see a country which had been through such a disaster, continue to live and determinedly get on with daily life. I was so moved that when I returned I was determined that the IAAF should contribute some help to Japan.”

The March 11 earthquake and tsunami left 23,000 people dead or missing.
