Letter: Find new ways to boost revenue

There are some who say we have a spending problem and not a revenue problem; however, I am confident that the vast majority of Washingtonians agree that we want our state government to fund almost all of the current state programs. Where the disagreement takes place the most is where we should cut if we have to cut.

Let’s stop cutting and instead address the revenue issue. Take the time to contact your legislators and ask them to find additional revenue. That being said, I ask that you go one step further and ask your legislators to not take the path of least resistance and ask voters for a basic sales tax increase, but rather, to get creative for once.

What about an additional, larger increase in sales tax on expensive items that are not necessities? What about changing the way we fund schools so that cutting levy equalization does not hurt the poorest of children? These are just a couple of ideas, I’m sure you have good ones too.

Let’s encourage our state Legislature to get revenue from those who can afford to pay the most so we don’t have to make cuts to those who can afford it the least.
