NEW YORK (AP) — NCAA President Mark Emmert says his organization could look into changing its bylaws to better establish its authority to address situations like the abuse scandals now roiling college sports.
The NCAA already has a working group considering rules changes to better prevent violations in what have traditionally been college sports’ problem areas, such as recruiting and amateurism. Emmert said Wednesday that the conversation may also include dealing with cases like those at Penn State and Syracuse.
Emmert emphasizes that there isn’t currently “an active discussion” on the issue, but adds “this is a very new topic.”
The NCAA is examining whether Penn State violated bylaws covering institutional control and ethical conduct. It is monitoring the Syracuse situation but has not initiated an inquiry. Emmert spoke to reporters after appearing at the Intercollegiate Athletics Forum.
