CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — Track great Michael Johnson is backing double-amputee Oscar Pistorius in able-bodied races, but initially was against it.

Now the retired 400-meter Olympic gold medalist wants to see Pistorius “do the best he can possibly do.”

Pistorius still needs to qualify for this summer’s London Olympics. Johnson told The Associated Press he admired the South African as “the poster boy” for athletes overcoming disability.

The two have become good friends, and shared a stage at a sports conference on Wednesday. Johnson said he’s “very supportive” of Pistorius.
