Portland police say an allegedly impaired Coos Bay, Ore., man had his three children in his 1994 Saturn on Monday when he stalled at the base of Portland’s Sellwood Bridge in the fast lane on Macadam Avenue.

Daniel Lee Sherman, 34, was arrested on suspicion of DUI, reckless driving and three counts of endangering the children, ages 10, 9 and 3.

Sherman told police he was driving from Coos Bay to La Center.

The first officers at the scene at about 5:40 p.m. called for a traffic officer to investigate Sherman’s alleged impairment, according to a bulletin from the Portland Police Bureau.

The children had called their grandmother on a cell phone to express their worries about their father’s driving, according to a press release.

The children were turned over to their grandmother, who lives in Woodland, Lt. Robert King said.

As for Sherman, he was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center.

In the jail, Sherman became belligerent and ended up with a black eye after fighting with officers, King said.
